Average & Median Income in Ontario by Age

In 2020, the median total income in Ontario was $41,200 and the average was $56,350, among people aged 15 and over with income (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). That compares with a national median of $41,200. The median was $46,000 for men and $37,200 for women. After adjusting for inflation, the median was $36,400 in 2015, so it rose 13% over five years.

The average sits above the median because a smaller number of high incomes pull it up — the guide to average income in Canada explains which figure to use.

How Ontario compares

Ontario's province-wide median income in 2020 was exactly the national median, and its age-band figures track the national ones closely, from $43,600 against $44,000 among those 25-34 to $34,800 against $33,200 among those 65 and older. Its net worth does not sit in the middle. Ontario ranks second of ten on median family net worth in every age band, from $203,800 among those 25-34 to $1,118,600 among those 55-64, always behind British Columbia and always ahead of Alberta. Its income ranking moves more: fourth among those 25-34, a tie with British Columbia, second at 45-54 at $56,800, and third in the two oldest bands. Ontario's net worth rank is better than its income rank in four of the five age bands and equal at 45-54. Against Alberta the two measures point in opposite directions, with Alberta ahead on median income at every age and Ontario ahead on net worth at every age. Quebec has a higher median income than Ontario among those 25-34 and 35-44, but Ontario is ahead from 45-54 on. Ontario's average income ranks second of ten in every band from 35-44 up, an average that sits well above its median, more so than in most provinces.

Income above is individual total income for all genders and education levels, from the 2021 Census. The comparison tool breaks it down by gender and education. Net worth is family-level, from the Survey of Financial Security, and is compared by province and age only — it is not broken down by gender or education.
