Average & Median Income in Prince Edward Island by Age

In 2020, the median total income in Prince Edward Island was $38,800 and the average was $46,120, among people aged 15 and over with income (Statistics Canada, 2021 Census). That compares with a national median of $41,200. The median was $41,600 for men and $36,400 for women. After adjusting for inflation, the median was $34,400 in 2015, so it rose 13% over five years.

The average sits above the median because a smaller number of high incomes pull it up — the guide to average income in Canada explains which figure to use.

How Prince Edward Island compares

Prince Edward Island has the smallest gap between men's and women's median income of any province, and its net worth rankings split in an unusual way. Its median family net worth ranks fourth of ten in every age band, from $122,400 among those 25-34 to $671,900 among those 55-64, yet its average net worth ranks only eighth in every band. A high median with a modest average is consistent with a thinner top end of the wealth distribution than in most provinces. Income runs well below that net worth rank. Prince Edward Island's median income ranks eighth among those 25-34, last among those 35-44 at $49,600, and then climbs to sixth by 65 and older, at $32,000. The contrast is sharpest against Saskatchewan: Saskatchewan's median income is higher than Prince Edward Island's in all five age bands, $56,000 against $50,400 at 45-54 for example, yet Prince Edward Island's median net worth is higher in all five, $519,900 against $513,100 in that same band. Against Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, the island has the higher median net worth at every age.

Income above is individual total income for all genders and education levels, from the 2021 Census. The comparison tool breaks it down by gender and education. Net worth is family-level, from the Survey of Financial Security, and is compared by province and age only — it is not broken down by gender or education.
